Edimilson Fernandes has officially joined BSC Young Boys on a four-year contract, returning to the Swiss Super League club where he previously spent a short loan spell in 2022.
The 29-year-old Swiss-Cape Verdean international, capped 34 times by Switzerland, arrives from Bundesliga side Mainz 05 and will remain with Young Boys until the summer of 2029.
The move marks a significant homecoming for Fernandes, whose career has spanned top divisions across Europe, including stints in England, Italy, Germany, and France.
Young Boys confirmed the signing through an official announcement, presenting Fernandes as a key addition to their midfield as they seek to maintain domestic dominance and improve their standing in European competitions.
Sporting director Christoph Spycher hailed the move, describing the midfielder as a “versatile and experienced leader” who is expected to strengthen the core of the squad.
“Edimilson brings a wealth of international and club experience,” Spycher said. “He is not only technically gifted but has a deep understanding of the game that will help anchor our midfield.”
This transfer represents a strategic reinforcement for head coach David Wagner, who is looking to add depth and leadership to his squad ahead of a demanding season.
Fernandes is no stranger to the Young Boys environment, having briefly joined the club on loan from Mainz during the second half of the 2021–22 season.
His return comes after a productive campaign in Ligue 1 with Brest, where he also gained experience in the UEFA Champions League.
Fernandes’s career reflects a steady progression through some of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
After beginning his professional journey with FC Sion in Switzerland, he moved to the English Premier League with West Ham United, followed by spells at Fiorentina in Serie A and Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga.
In total, he has made 98 Bundesliga appearances and played 62 times in the Swiss Super League.
The midfielder’s ability to adapt to various playing styles and tactical systems has been a hallmark of his career, making him a valuable asset for any team he joins.
Young Boys believe this adaptability will be vital as they aim to compete across multiple fronts in the coming season.
Technical director Mathieu Beda also expressed enthusiasm about Fernandes’s arrival, describing him as a player entering the prime of his career with the mindset and physicality to elevate the team’s performance.
“He has left his mark in some of Europe’s most demanding leagues and arrives here with the hunger to win,” Beda said. “His experience will be essential in guiding younger players and bringing more structure to our midfield.”
For Fernandes, the return to Young Boys offers both familiarity and fresh opportunity. Speaking to the club following his signing, he shared his motivation and belief in the team’s ambitions.
“Coming back to Young Boys feels right,” he said. “I know the club well, I’ve stayed in touch with some of the players and staff, and I’m excited about the goals we want to achieve together.”
With the addition of Fernandes, Young Boys strengthen not just their playing squad but also their leadership group.
The Swiss champions are now better positioned to compete domestically and in European competitions, where experience and depth are often decisive.
As the season approaches, fans will be eager to see Fernandes bring his international pedigree and winning mentality back to the Wankdorf Stadium, where expectations are high for continued success.
