Newcastle United fear that Alexander Isak could refuse to play in Premier League matches this August as uncertainty over his future deepens, with the club under pressure to resolve the striker’s situation before the close of the summer window.
Isak, who was born in Sweden to Eritrean parents, remains a central figure at St. James’ Park, but the forward is reportedly unsettled as speculation over a potential move to Liverpool intensifies.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the 25-year-old is prepared to withhold participation in early-season matches if no clarity is provided—though this is not expected to continue beyond the transfer window, especially with the 2026 World Cup looming.
Newcastle now face a critical decision: secure a replacement—or even two—and allow Isak to depart, or convince him to stay by offering a new long-term deal. However, the latter is only feasible if Liverpool step back from the deal entirely.
From Isak’s camp, it is understood he may only agree to an extension if it includes a release clause that guarantees an exit in 12 months, contingent on Liverpool withdrawing their interest this summer.
The Reds remain seriously interested and are reportedly prepared to break the British transfer record to sign the Swedish international.
However, there is still uncertainty over whether they would meet Newcastle’s valuation, which has been quoted at up to £150 million.
For now, Newcastle are holding firm, but the risk of Isak sitting out competitive fixtures—just as the Premier League season begins—adds urgency to the club’s decision-making.
