Alexander Isak has pledged to fight his way back to top form after a difficult start to life at Liverpool, rejecting suggestions he faces the hardest spell of his career.
The Swedish striker, who has Eritrean heritage, arrived on Merseyside in September following a protracted transfer saga that ended his time at Newcastle United.
Isak became the most expensive footballer in British history after completing his £125 million move to Anfield on deadline day. His preparation was disrupted after missing Newcastle’s pre-season tour of the Far East and later training alone at former club Real Sociedad.
The 26-year-old did not feature in Newcastle’s pre-season programme, leaving him short of full sharpness when the transfer was finally completed. A groin injury in October further interrupted his momentum, sidelining him for a month during a critical settling-in period.
So far, Isak has scored once in the Premier League, finding the net in a 2–0 victory at West Ham United in November. That return contrasts sharply with last season, when he scored 23 league goals for Newcastle and established himself among the division’s most feared forwards.
Despite his club struggles, Isak was awarded Sweden’s 2025 Guldbollen for performances across the calendar year for club and country. Speaking to Sportbladet, Isak insisted he remains confident of rediscovering his best level at Liverpool.
“[Liverpool’s interest] was the most interesting thing for me,” Isak said. “I felt quite early on that this was where I wanted to go. It is important to turn it around,” he said.
Isak dismissed claims this is his toughest period, pointing to previous challenges in Germany, Spain, England, and earlier in his career.
“That’s how a football career works, it’s just something you have to fight your way out of,” he added.
Liverpool head to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday aiming to extend an unbeaten run across all competitions.
Isak could be handed a starting role as he looks to convert patience into performance.
