The Allsvenskan, Sweden’s premier football division, concluded this weekend with Elfsborg clinching the title. BK Hacken sealed the season with a 2-1 victory against GIF Sundvall, securing their position as the runner-up in the championship. Beyond the team’s success, Ghanaian striker Abdul Majeed Waris had an outstanding performance, finishing as the top scorer of the season with an impressive tally of 23 goals.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for the 21-year-old Waris, making him the first Ghanaian player to conclude a European championship with over 20 goals. The last Ghanaian player to claim the top scorer title in a European league was Anthony Yeboah in the Bundesliga during the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons, with 20 and 18 goals, respectively.

Waris’s goal tally of 23 also surpasses the goal-scoring records of all top scorers in the Swedish championship since the 2002 season, when Nigerian Peter Ijeh netted 24 goals. The young striker’s stellar performance has garnered attention, and he has already agreed to a move to Spartak Moscow, with plans to join the Russian club in January.
