SuperSport United have confirmed the departure of head coach Gavin Hunt with immediate effect, appointing Andre Arendse as interim manager while Grant Johnson steps in as assistant.
The Pretoria-based club issued a statement on Friday morning announcing an amicable separation with Hunt, whose second spell at the helm comes to an end amid a challenging season.
“SuperSport United FC and coach Gavin Hunt have agreed to an amicable separation with immediate effect,” the club stated, expressing gratitude for his contributions to South African football.
Hunt, a four-time league-winning coach, previously guided SuperSport United to three consecutive PSL titles between 2008 and 2010, along with a Nedbank Cup triumph.
After returning to the club in 2022, he steered them to an impressive third-place finish last season. However, this campaign has been far more difficult, with the team languishing near the bottom of the league table, securing just 21 points from as many matches.
Arendse now assumes interim coaching duties for a second time, having previously stepped in following Kaitano Tembo’s departure in the 2021/22 season.
The club will now look to stabilize their form under his leadership as they aim to climb the standings.
Despite parting ways, SuperSport United wished Hunt well for the future, stating: “We remain confident in his ability to make a lasting impact on South African and African football. We thank him for his dedication and service.”
