SuperSport and the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) have today confirmed that the current broadcast contract for the Zambia Super League (MTN Super League) will not be renewed after the end of the 2024/25 season in May.
Since the initial agreement in 2007, SuperSport has been instrumental in growing Zambia’s premier football league.
Over 18 years, the broadcaster invested significantly in developing the league, developing local football talent, and expanding the country’s live sports production industry.
SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha said of the success of the partnership:
“This partnership with the Football Association of Zambia is one we are very proud of.”. SuperSport has put a lot of money into developing Zambian and African football as a whole.
“We remain Africa’s biggest broadcaster, and we are happy with the part we have had in Zambian football and creating live sports broadcasting as a business in Zambia.
“Looking back from where we started in 2007 and the capacity that we have passed on to the local economy, sportpeople, and society, we believe that we are leaving the league in a better way.
“SuperSport would like to extend its appreciation to the FAZ President Andrew Kamanga, General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, the FAZ Executive Committee, the Clubs and all officials and staff who have been pivotal in spearheading our partnership.”
FAZ President Andrew Kamanga also welcomed the contribution SuperSport made:
“The Football Association of Zambia would like to thank SuperSport for the contribution they have made in helping develop football in Zambia.
“We are aware that the international industry dynamics shift and local socio-economic conditions like higher costs and load-shedding have impacted the MultiChoice and SuperSport business.”.
“Since we have been partners, Zambian football and the broadcasting industry have grown leaps and bounds. Although the 18-year broadcast rights partnership runs out at the conclusion of the current 2024/25 Zambia Super League season in May, both parties have been appreciated for handling the matter in a professional manner.”
Despite this change, MultiChoice will still be in Zambia, offering entertainment and sports content through DStv, GOtv, and Showmax platforms.
SuperSport has indicated that it will not make any additional comments on the matter at this point.
