The Super Eagles B team of Nigeria has intensified their preparations for the return leg of their CHAN 2024 qualifier against Ghana, with a special focus on penalty shootouts.
The training session, held on Thursday evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, reflects the team’s determination to secure a spot in the tournament.
Coaches Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu led the session, which covered all facets of the game, including defensive tactics and offensive strategies.
The highlight, however, was the penalty shootout practice involving all 23 players.
With the potential for the match to be decided from the spot, the team dedicated considerable time to mastering this critical aspect of the game. The session concluded at 7:25 pm.
Stalemate in First Leg
The first leg of the encounter in Accra ended in a goalless draw, leaving both teams with all to play for in the second leg.
With the away goals rule no longer in effect, a draw in Uyo would lead directly to penalties, making the training drills even more crucial.
Despite the preparations for such a scenario, assistant coach Fidelis Ilechukwu remained optimistic, playfully dismissing the possibility of a draw.
“We’re not expecting a draw on Saturday,” he quipped, offering a light-hearted yet motivational boost for the players.
Ghana’s Arrival
The Black Galaxies of Ghana are expected to arrive in Uyo on Friday, ahead of the decisive match.
According to Dr. Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the team will first land at Port Harcourt airport before making the journey to Uyo by road.
High Stakes in CHAN Qualification
The outcome of this tie will determine who advances to the CHAN 2024 finals, set to be hosted across three countries: Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
The victor of the Nigeria-Ghana clash will play their group-stage matches in Tanzania.
As both teams prepare for a high-stakes encounter, the Super Eagles B are leaving no stone unturned.
Their rigorous training sessions and strategic focus on penalties underline their commitment to overcoming Ghana and securing their place in the prestigious tournament.
