Sundowns set for stern test against unbeaten Al Hilal powerhouse

Mamelodi Sundowns will gauge themselves against one of Asian football’s most expensively assembled and in-form sides when they meet Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal in a pre-season friendly on Friday.

The clash pits the South African champions against a club that went through the entire 2025-26 Saudi Pro League campaign without defeat, boasts a squad valued at more than four times that of Sundowns, and is coached by Champions League finalist Simone Inzaghi.

Unbeaten league campaign – but no title

Al Hilal, known as The Blue Waves, completed the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League season unbeaten yet still missed out on the title, finishing two points behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

They became only the second side in the history of Saudi Arabia’s top flight to navigate a full league campaign without losing, but nine draws ultimately proved costly in the title race.

Financial muscle and squad value

The scale of the challenge facing Sundowns is underlined by Al Hilal’s market valuation.

The Saudi club’s squad is worth around €176m (R3.3bn), approximately four-and-a-half times the value of the Sundowns group expected to feature in the friendly.

Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves is rated as Al Hilal’s most valuable asset at €25m (R469m). He is followed by Theo Hernandez and Darwin Nunez, who are each valued at €20m (R375m).

Star names across the pitch

Al Hilal’s financial power is matched by the array of high-profile players available to Inzaghi.

Karim Benzema is among the leading figures in attack and has already found form in pre-season, having scored in a recent 2-1 victory over Sturm Graz during the club’s training camp in Austria.

At the back, The Blue Waves can call on Kalidou Koulibaly, formerly of Chelsea, and Portugal right-back Joao Cancelo, adding further European pedigree to their defensive line.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who starred for Morocco at the World Cup, is not expected to be involved in the match against Sundowns following his international commitments.

Big-money transfer moves

Al Hilal have also been at the centre of some of the most high-profile transfer stories of the current window.

The Saudi side completed the signing of winger Crysencio Summerville from West Ham United for a reported €80m (R1.5bn), adding another major attacking option to their ranks.

They are also reported to be pursuing reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele from Paris Saint-Germain, as they continue to target some of Europe’s most decorated players.

Further reports suggest Al Hilal hold an interest in exploring a potential move for Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, underlining their ambition to keep strengthening a squad already rich in star quality.

Inzaghi brings Champions League pedigree

On the touchline, Al Hilal are led by Simone Inzaghi, who arrived in Saudi Arabia after a highly successful spell with Inter Milan.

The Italian coach guided Inter to UEFA Champions League finals in both 2023 and 2025, enhancing his reputation on the European stage before being lured to the Gulf.

Inzaghi captured the Serie A title in the 2023-24 season with Inter and had long been regarded in Italy as a cup specialist, having lifted multiple Coppa Italia trophies with both Inter and Lazio.

He is known for favouring a 3-5-2 system, a set-up that Sundowns will need to solve as they test themselves against one of the most formidable, well-resourced sides in the modern game.
