Sundowns face millions in financial losses if Champions League run ends early

Mamelodi Sundowns face a significant financial setback if they fail to reach the CAF Champions League group stages this season, following the substantial rewards the competition has provided in recent years.

The Tshwane club earned $6 million (R99.4 million) after winning the Champions League last season. That success also secured their place in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, bringing further financial benefits.

However, Sundowns have yet to guarantee their place in this season’s group stages. They face Angolan side Wiliete at Loftus Stadium tonight after the first leg ended goalless.

Reaching the group phase would ensure Sundowns receive at least $700 000 (R11.6 million). A failure to qualify would therefore mean missing out on that guaranteed payment, as well as ending their defence of the title at the qualifying stage.

Wiliete, the current Girabola log leaders, would gain an advantage if they score an away goal in the second leg. Sundowns must therefore secure victory at home to avoid an early upset and continue their Champions League campaign.

The defending champions have previously faced demanding situations in the competition and emerged successfully. Their experience in high-pressure Champions League matches will be important as they seek to take advantage of home conditions and reach the group stages.
