Sundowns end Pirates’ MTN8 reign with late penalty victory

Mamelodi Sundowns claimed the MTN8 trophy for the first time in five years after beating Orlando Pirates 2-0 in Saturday evening’s final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The result brought an end to Pirates’ four-year hold on the competition and denied them the opportunity to become the first team to win five successive MTN8 titles.

Miguel Cardoso’s Sundowns overcame an energetic opening from the Buccaneers to take the lead in the 11th minute. Aubrey Modiba’s free-kick created uncertainty in the Pirates penalty area, allowing Thabang Matuludi to reach the loose ball and backheel it through Lebone Seema’s legs.

Teboho Mokoena reacted quickest to complete the move from close range and put the Brazilians ahead.

Although Pirates attempted to respond, Sundowns controlled the first half through their organisation and possession. Their defensive structure also disrupted the midfield combinations that have been a key feature of Orlando Pirates’ play, forcing the reigning champions to look for opportunities from wider areas.

Sipho Chaine kept Pirates in contention before half-time, making four important saves as Sundowns continued to dictate the contest.

Orlando Pirates increased the intensity after the interval, but Ronwen Williams became increasingly important to Sundowns’ attempts to protect their lead. The goalkeeper made three vital second-half interventions, including a penalty save in the 61st minute to deny Giamphani Lungu.

Sundowns then came close to adding a second goal when Tashreeq Matthews broke through the Pirates defence and supplied Brayan Leon. The forward was unable to take advantage of the opening, leaving the contest finely balanced.

With both teams committing players forward, the match became more open as Pirates searched for an equaliser and Sundowns looked to finish the job.

The decisive moment came late in the game when Sundowns were awarded a penalty. Iqraam Rayners converted from the spot to make it 2-0 and secure the silverware for Cardoso’s side.

The victory was achieved at the iconic venue used during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and ended Orlando Pirates’ run as MTN8 champions. It also completed Sundowns’ return to the top of the competition after a five-year wait.
