Sunderland’s €33m bid for Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie rejected

Toulouse have rejected a €33m offer from Sunderland for young left-back Dayann Methalie, despite the French defender reportedly already agreeing personal terms with the Premier League club.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Toulouse did not consider Sunderland’s proposal sufficient, despite previous reports suggesting the French club had placed a €30m valuation on the 20-year-old.

The two clubs are expected to hold further discussions in the coming hours as Sunderland continue their efforts to complete the signing.

Methalie wants Sunderland move

Methalie has reportedly agreed to join Sunderland, leaving the English club needing to find an agreement with Toulouse before the transfer can be completed.

The French side’s decision to reject the €33m bid has therefore created another hurdle in the negotiations, although talks are expected to continue.

Should Methalie leave Toulouse during the current transfer window, he would become the club’s record sale.

Breakthrough season in France

Methalie has enjoyed an impressive first full season at professional level, establishing himself as an important player for Toulouse.

The left-back came through the club’s academy and made 30 appearances across all competitions during the campaign, starting 24 of those matches.

He contributed two goals and two assists while also earning recognition at international level with France Under-21s.

Methalie remains under contract with Toulouse until 2029, giving the French club a strong negotiating position as Sunderland attempt to secure the highly rated defender.

With the initial €33m offer rejected, negotiations between Sunderland and Toulouse are expected to continue as both sides consider the next step in a deal that could make Methalie the biggest sale in the French club’s history.
