Sunderland set to land Mozambique’s Reinildo Mandava after Atletico Madrid farewell
Sunderland are on the verge of completing a big signing with Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo Mandava expected to join the club on a two-year deal.
The 31-year-old Mozambican international has now officially parted ways with Atletico, bringing his two-year stint under Diego Simeone to an end following the expiration of his contract.
Mandava, a left-back known for his tenacity and discipline, was previously a key figure in Lille’s Ligue 1-winning side before moving to Spain.
He featured 103 times for Atletico Madrid, earning the admiration of fans and coaches alike for his consistent displays.
His departure was confirmed in an emotional post by the club’s English-language social media handle on Monday morning, describing him as “an example of dedication, courage and heart.”
The player himself responded with a heartfelt message, expressing deep gratitude to the club and supporters.
“Thank you very much for everything to each of you for these incredible years… I will always be supporting and celebrating… I love you all for making a Mozambican boy live that incredible dream of sharing the dressing room with the great stars that you are.”
While there had been interest from Leeds United and Crystal Palace, it is Sunderland who have moved swiftly to secure Mandava’s signature.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, stating: “Reinildo Mandava signs in at Sunderland on a two-year contract, as revealed yesterday.”
The signing is seen as a bold and ambitious move by the Black Cats, who continue to strengthen their squad with experienced talent.
