Sunderland have stepped up their recruitment plans by identifying AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as a key target as the club looks to strengthen its midfield options.
After securing the arrival of Habib Diarra last summer, the English side now aims to continue its Senegalese recruitment drive with another highly rated young talent.
Camara joined Monaco in the summer of 2024 from FC Metz for a fee reported to be around €15 million. He quickly adapted to the demands of top-level football and established himself as an influential figure in Monaco’s midfield.
His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and consistency across performances have marked him out as one of the club’s standout performers this season. Those displays have not gone unnoticed, particularly in England.
According to British outlet TEAMtalk, Sunderland have emerged as one of the most serious suitors for the 21-year-old. Club officials continue to monitor Camara’s progress closely as they prepare for an ambitious second half of the campaign.
With promotion objectives still firmly in sight, Sunderland see midfield reinforcement as essential to maintaining momentum and competitiveness.
The presence of Habib Diarra at the Stadium of Light could also play a role in Sunderland’s pursuit.
The club believes familiarity, shared international experience, and cultural connection could help ease Camara’s transition to English football.
Management views Camara as a long-term investment who could add balance, energy, and creativity to the midfield unit.
However, negotiations promise to be complex. AS Monaco value the Senegal international highly and do not intend to part with him easily.
Reports indicate the Ligue 1 club will demand a fee of at least €30 million, reflecting both Camara’s current importance and his future potential.
Several other European clubs have also expressed interest, which could further drive up the price and intensify competition.
For now, Camara remains fully focused on international duty. He continues his AFCON 2025 campaign with Senegal and prepares for the Lions’ decisive third group match against Benin later tonight.
Any transfer discussions are expected to progress only after his continental commitments conclude, as Sunderland weigh their options in a rapidly evolving transfer market.
