Sunderland dealt major blow as Brian Brobbey suffers serious hamstring injury
Sunderland have been dealt a major injury blow with Brian Brobbey reportedly suffering a serious hamstring injury while on international duty with the Netherlands.
The striker picked up the injury during the first half of the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Germany on September 24 and was forced to leave the pitch.
Brobbey’s injury comes at a particularly unfortunate time for Sunderland, just days after he produced a sensational performance against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
The Dutch forward scored all three of Sunderland’s goals in a thrilling 5-3 defeat, delivering arguably his finest performance since joining the club and immediately attracting widespread attention in English football.
However, former PSV doctor Cees-Rein van den Hoogenband has described the injury as serious, suggesting that Brobbey’s problem could be linked to the heavy workload placed on modern footballers.
Speaking to Sportnieuws, Van den Hoogenband said the injury appeared to be a typical case of overuse and warned about the lack of sufficient recovery time for players amid an increasingly congested football calendar.
“I hold my breath. I fear that many more will follow,” he warned.
Brobbey has already been ruled out for the remainder of the current international window, with Joshua Zirkzee brought into the Netherlands squad as his replacement.
The injury represents a significant concern for Sunderland, who are preparing for a demanding run of fixtures after the international break.
Regis Le Bris’ side are scheduled to face Brighton on October 10 before travelling to Torreense in the Europa League. They will then face Bournemouth away from home before another European assignment against Lech Poznan.
Sunderland have also suffered other injury setbacks during the international break, with Romaine Mundle and Habib Diarra among the players unavailable, while Dan Ballard sustained a hamstring problem while representing Northern Ireland.
Brobbey’s potential absence would therefore be a major setback for Le Bris, particularly after the striker demonstrated his importance with his hat-trick against Manchester City.
The 23-year-old joined Sunderland from Ajax and remains under contract until 2029. His impressive form has also reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window, although Sunderland have maintained that the striker is not for sale.
For now, the club’s priority will be Brobbey’s recovery and determining the full extent of his hamstring injury, with Sunderland hoping to have their key forward back as soon as he is medically cleared to return.
