Sunderland have issued a strongly worded statement condemning racist abuse directed at Brian Brobbey following Sunday’s ill-tempered Premier League encounter with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dutch-Ghanaian forward became a central figure in a fiery contest that quickly spilled beyond the pitch, with incidents during the match fuelling anger among sections of the home support.

However, the club has moved swiftly to shift the focus toward the unacceptable nature of the abuse that followed, underlining a zero-tolerance stance on discrimination.

In a statement released after the final whistle, Sunderland confirmed the matter had been escalated to the authorities and relevant football bodies, stressing their full backing for the player amid what they described as a deeply concerning trend.

“The club has reported the incident to the Premier League, the relevant social media platforms, and the police, and we expect swift action to be taken against those responsible.

“Racism is abhorrent and has no place in our game or in society, and we will continue to call it out clearly and unapologetically every time it occurs.

“Football must be a safe and inclusive environment for all without exception.”

Police investigation underway

Authorities have since confirmed that the matter is under investigation, with Northumbria Police acknowledging reports of discriminatory comments circulating online.

“We can confirm we are looking into reports of discriminatory comments circulating on social media. We condemn all forms of discrimination – it has no place in society and our communities.”
