Sunderland beat Fulham as Leeds United and Brentford share the points

Sunderland handed Fulham and manager Alvaro Arbeloa a second successive defeat in the league with a 1-0 victory, while Leeds United and Brentford drew 1-1 in the other fixture.

Wilson Isidor scored the only goal of the match at Sunderland, finding the decisive breakthrough in the 75th minute.

The result gave Sunderland their first three points of the season, having begun their campaign with defeat by Ipswich Town. Fulham, meanwhile, remain without a point after losing their opening match 3-2 to Chelsea.

For Arbeloa, the defeat represents a difficult start to his time in charge of Fulham, who have now been beaten in each of their first two league games under the Spanish manager.

Sunderland had to wait until the final quarter of the game to turn their performance into a victory. Isidor’s goal settled the contest and ensured the home side responded to their opening-day loss.

Fulham were unable to find an equaliser after Sunderland moved in front, leaving them with consecutive defeats at the beginning of the league season.

At Elland Road, Leeds United recovered from falling behind to earn a point against Brentford.

Kevin Schade put Brentford ahead in the 41st minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead before half-time. Leeds remained in the contest and eventually levelled when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in the 79th minute.

Neither side could find a winning goal after the equaliser, meaning the points were shared.

The draw moved Brentford on to four points. They had opened the season with a victory over Tottenham.

Leeds United also reached four points from their first two matches, having beaten Nottingham Forest in the opening round of the campaign.

The result leaves both teams unbeaten after two games, although neither was able to add a second win to its opening-day success. Brentford were denied a second consecutive victory after Schade’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Calvert-Lewin, while Leeds had to come from behind to avoid defeat.

The two results produced contrasting outcomes for the four clubs. Sunderland collected their first points following their defeat by Ipswich Town, while Fulham suffered another loss after their narrow defeat by Chelsea. Brentford and Leeds United both extended their tallies to four points after securing victories in their opening fixtures.

Isidor’s late strike was enough to separate Sunderland and Fulham, whereas the meeting between Leeds United and Brentford remained level after Calvert-Lewin’s second-half intervention.
