Sunderland agree deal to sign Austrian-Ghanaian defender Kevin Danso

Austrian defender of Ghanaian descent, Kevin Danso, is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Sunderland after the two clubs reportedly reached an agreement for the defender.

The move follows Danso’s decision to inform Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi that he wanted to leave the club before the transfer window closes.

“Danso came to me two days ago and he said wants to leave,” De Zerbi told the press over the weekend after Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat by Newcastle United.

Sunderland revive interest in Danso

Sunderland moved quickly to renew their interest in Danso after learning of his desire to leave Tottenham.

An agreement has now reportedly been reached for the defender to move to the newly promoted Premier League side on Deadline Day.

According to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Danso is expected to join Sunderland on Tuesday, but the transfer remains conditional on Tottenham securing a replacement.

The final outcome will therefore depend on Spurs completing their own recruitment before allowing the Austria international to depart.

Tottenham paid £21m for defender

Danso joined Tottenham permanently from French club Lens last summer after initially spending time at the north London club on loan.

Spurs subsequently activated a permanent deal worth £21m for the defender.

However, after only one season in north London, Danso now appears set for a new challenge with Sunderland.

Ghanaian heritage

Danso’s potential move will be closely followed in Ghana because of his family heritage.

The 27-year-old was born in Voitsberg, Austria, and represents the Austrian national team, but has Ghanaian roots.

His expected switch to Sunderland would give him another opportunity to establish himself in the Premier League after his spell with Tottenham.

For now, the transfer remains dependent on Tottenham finding a replacement, but Danso is reportedly on course to complete his move to Sunderland on Deadline Day.
