Born on November 28, 1988, in Aba, Nigeria, Sunday Mba is a prominent figure among the emerging talents of the Super Eagles, earning the confidence of Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi. Once a midfielder for Dolphins, Mba is currently a subject of interest for both Warri Wolves and Enugu Rangers, his former clubs, following the termination of his contract with CA Bastia. His contributions have earned him a nomination in the “Footballer of the Year” category at the 2013 Africa Top Sports Awards.
Mba’s football journey began at the Pepsi Football Academy in Nigeria, where he honed his skills. In 2007, he stepped into the high-level arena with Enyimba, and the subsequent season saw him joining Enugu Rangers. His inaugural goal in the Nigerian championship occurred in 2012 while playing for Warri Wolves.
The turning point in Mba’s career came in 2013, thanks to the trust placed in him by coach Stephen Keshi. Regular call-ups to the Super Eagles followed, and his outstanding performance in the 2013 CAN, which Nigeria won, led to his nomination in the “Player of the Year – Playing in Africa” category at the Glo CAF Awards 2013. Mba’s crucial goals in the tournament, including one against Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals and another in the final against Burkina Faso, coincided with Sundays, adding a mythical aura to his achievements.
Despite attracting interest from various French clubs, Mba signed with CA Bastia in August 2013, playing in the French League 2. However, his contract was later canceled due to disagreements over financial terms. Undeterred, Mba remains optimistic, stating, “It’s not the end of the world for me. I can handle this difficult time and hope to continue exploring other possibilities. I have to work hard, and I know that God will open other doors for me.”
In recognition of his accomplishments, Sunday Mba is nominated in the “Footballer of the Year” category at the 2013 Africa Top Sports Awards.
