Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah targets CHAN final after stunning Algeria victory
Sudan advanced to the semi-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship after eliminating hosts Algeria in a dramatic quarter-final decided by penalties.
The Sudanese side, guided by Ghanaian coach James Kwesi Appiah, delivered one of the tournament’s biggest shocks by knocking out one of the pre-competition favourites.
Following a tense 1-1 draw, Sudan held their nerve in the shootout to secure their place in the last four, where they will face Madagascar.
Reflecting on the triumph, Appiah revealed that tactical discipline and meticulous preparation were central to his team’s success.
“Against a team like Algeria, we could not simply throw men forward,” he explained. “We decided to sit deeper and rely on counterattacks. That was the strategy, and it gave us the qualification.”
The approach proved effective as Sudan absorbed prolonged pressure from the hosts, who had entered the tournament as one of the strongest contenders for the trophy. While Algeria created more opportunities, Sudan remained compact and resolute, ensuring the contest remained level until the decisive shootout.
For Appiah, who once captained Ghana’s Black Stars and later managed them at international level, the victory reflected the hard work his players have invested since the competition began.
He noted that their success in the penalty shootout was no coincidence. “From the start of the tournament, we have been practising spot-kicks every day,” he said. “You never know when penalties will be needed, so we prepared for that situation.”
Sudan’s progress has drawn widespread attention, with their performance against Algeria described as both disciplined and courageous. By defeating one of the favourites, they have shifted expectations and underlined their credentials as genuine challengers for the title.
Yet Appiah has been quick to temper celebrations, urging his squad to remain grounded as they prepare for the semi-final. “It is a step-by-step process,” he insisted. “We have to forget about Algeria now and put our full concentration on Madagascar. Our big goal is within reach, but the focus must always be on the next match.”
Madagascar, who themselves have impressed during the tournament, will present another stern test for Sudan. With both sides chasing a historic place in the final, the encounter promises to be fiercely contested.
For Sudanese football, the achievement already marks a moment of pride. Reaching the last four of the CHAN is a significant milestone, particularly given the stature of the opponent they overcame in the quarter-final.
The victory has also enhanced the reputation of Appiah, whose experience and tactical acumen have been instrumental in guiding his team through difficult matches.
As anticipation builds for the semi-final, Sudan’s players and supporters will draw belief from their resilience against Algeria. The combination of discipline, preparation, and clear focus, instilled by Appiah, has brought them to the brink of the final.
While the celebrations in the immediate aftermath of their quarter-final win were heartfelt, the message from their coach is unambiguous: the journey is not yet complete. Sudan, under Appiah’s guidance, are determined to keep pushing forward until their “big goal” is realised.
