Steve Zakuani Announces Retirement from Football Due to Injuries

Steve Zakuani, the Congolese-born forward and former MLS number one draft pick, has officially announced his retirement from professional football. The 26-year-old made the emotional decision public on Wednesday, citing a long and painful battle with recurring injuries.

“It is with sadness that I announce my retirement from football. This is the most difficult decision I have had to make in my life,” Zakuani wrote on his personal website. “I have thought about it at length over the past few months, listening to my heart, and I am certain that I am doing the right thing.”

🩺 A Career Derailed by Injury

Zakuani’s promising career was severely impacted by injuries starting in 2011. He suffered a horrific leg break and later endured compartment syndrome, two groin/hernia surgeries, and persistent hamstring problems.

“Every time I battled one injury, another one came along. I can’t describe the toll it took on me physically, and also mentally,” he added.

⚽ From #1 Pick to MLS Inspiration

Zakuani began his professional career as the first overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, joining Seattle Sounders FC. He later had a stint with Portland Timbers, but never fully recovered his pre-injury form.

Seattle Sounders executive Sigi Schmid paid tribute:

“He’s a player who will remain in the history of our club and it’s sad to see him leave today.”

Though his playing days have ended, Zakuani’s resilience and passion for the game will continue to inspire fans and players alike.
