Contrary to earlier reports, Stéphane Sessegnon has not yet been cleared to play for Benin and will miss the Squirrels’ opening match of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.
In a letter from CAF to the Benin Football Federation, it was confirmed that the midfielder and captain is still serving his suspension. As a result, Sessegnon will be unavailable for the match against Ghana but will be eligible to play against Guinea-Bissau and Cameroon.
The former Paris Saint-Germain player is serving the remainder of his ban, which stems from his red card in the November clash against Algeria in Cotonou. His absence will be a notable loss for Benin as they begin their campaign in Egypt.
