Stephan El Shaarawy set for Roma farewell as free agent

Stephan El Shaarawy will wave goodbye to AS Roma at the end of the season, with the forward poised to leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Roma’s hierarchy have decided against offering the 33-year-old a new deal, bringing his latest spell in the capital to a close when his contract expires in June.

El Shaarawy has been a familiar and much-loved presence for the Giallorossi over several years, chipping in with important goals and moments of quality, but both parties are now preparing for a parting of ways. Once his contract runs down, he will be free to choose his next chapter, and interest is already starting to build.

Genoa are understood to be leading the chase and are reportedly lining up a two-year contract proposal with an option for a further season, a deal that could keep him in Liguria until 2029. For El Shaarawy, it would offer the chance to stay in Serie A and bring his experience, versatility and attacking spark to a new project, while Roma look ahead to refreshing their squad for the future.
