Stellenbosch confirm departure of defender Thabo Moloisane

Stellenbosch FC have announced the departure of defender Thabo Moloisane following the expiration of his contract at the club.

Moloisane will leave the club at the end of the season, bringing an end to a highly influential three-year spell in the Cape Winelands.

The highly-rated defender opted not to renew his contract with Stellenbosch, with both parties agreeing to part ways once his current contract runs out.

His departure marks the end of a significant chapter for a player who developed into one of the most consistent and respected defenders in South African football during his time at Stellenbosch.

Since joining the Maroons from Maritzburg United in 2023, the 27-year-old made an impressive 115 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as a key figure in the club’s defensive structure. His leadership, positional awareness, and consistency played a major role in Stellenbosch’s rise as a competitive force in domestic football.

During his spell at the club, Moloisane helped Stellenbosch FC secure the Carling Knockout title, while also playing an important role in the team’s back-to-back runs to the MTN8 finals. In addition, he was part of the squad that twice qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup, marking a period of steady growth and continental exposure for the club.

Individually, Moloisane’s performances did not go unnoticed. He earned five international caps for South Africa national football team, commonly known as Bafana Bafana, further underlining his rise as one of the country’s reliable defensive options. His form also saw him nominated for the 2024–25 Betway Premiership Defender of the Season award, highlighting his influence at the highest level of South African club football in the Betway Premiership.

As his departure becomes official, attention has already turned toward his next destination, with strong transfer interest beginning to build. Among the clubs reportedly monitoring his situation is Kaizer Chiefs, who are believed to be exploring the possibility of securing his signature on a free transfer.

Kaizer Chiefs are understood to be in the market for defensive reinforcements ahead of the new campaign, and Moloisane’s availability without a transfer fee makes him an attractive option. His experience in domestic competitions, combined with his growing international pedigree, is seen as a strong fit for a club aiming to rebuild and strengthen its squad depth.

For Stellenbosch FC, Moloisane’s exit represents the loss of a key defensive leader, but the club has expressed gratitude for his contribution over the past three seasons. His influence both on and off the pitch has been widely acknowledged as part of the team’s evolution into one of the most competitive sides in South African football.

As the season concludes, Moloisane now enters a new phase of his career, with several potential opportunities on the horizon. Whether his next step takes him to Naturena with Kaizer Chiefs or elsewhere, his reputation as a reliable and experienced defender ensures he will remain a sought-after figure in the domestic market.
