Stellenbosch closes in on midfielder Njabulo Blom

Stellenbosch FC are reportedly on the verge of securing the services of South African midfielder Njabulo Blom as the club continues its squad restructuring ahead of the new Betway Premiership season.

The highly-rated midfielder is currently a free agent after parting ways with Vietnamese outfit Thep Xanh Nam Dinh FC following an underwhelming spell in Southeast Asia. His departure has opened the door for a return to South African football, with Stellenbosch emerging as the frontrunners for his signature.

Blom’s career has taken an unexpected path in recent years. After establishing himself as one of the most promising midfielders in the Betway Premiership during his time at Kaizer Chiefs, he secured a move abroad in 2023, joining St. Louis City SC in the United States.

The move was viewed as a major step forward for the midfielder, who had impressed with his energy, defensive discipline and versatility during his time at Amakhosi. However, his overseas adventure failed to fully deliver on expectations, and subsequent moves did not provide the stability or consistent playing time needed to maintain his upward trajectory.

His most recent stint with Nam Dinh also proved difficult, ending after just one season. As a result, the midfielder has been seeking a fresh start and an opportunity to revive his career in familiar surroundings.

The Cape Winelands club is undergoing significant changes following the conclusion of the season. Management has reportedly placed more than ten players on the transfer list as part of a major squad overhaul aimed at strengthening key areas of the team.

Among those affected by the restructuring is Nigerian defender Olisa Ndah, who only arrived from Orlando Pirates in January. Despite primarily being a central defender, Ndah has occasionally been deployed in midfield due to a lack of depth in that area.

Coach Gavin Hunt has previously acknowledged the need to strengthen his midfield options, and Blom’s impending arrival is widely viewed as a direct response to that challenge.

Known for his tireless work rate, ball-winning ability and tactical intelligence, Blom would bring valuable experience to the Stellenbosch midfield despite still being in the prime years of his career. His ability to operate as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder or even in defensive positions makes him an attractive option for a coach who values versatility and discipline.

The potential signing would also represent a significant statement of intent from Stellenbosch. The club has steadily established itself as one of South Africa’s most competitive sides in recent seasons, regularly challenging for top positions and continental qualification spots.

Adding a player of Blom’s pedigree could further strengthen their ambitions as they prepare for another demanding campaign. The former Chiefs star possesses valuable experience at both domestic and international level, having represented South Africa and competed in different football environments abroad.

For Blom, the move could be the perfect opportunity to reignite a career that has stalled since his departure from Kaizer Chiefs. Returning to the Betway Premiership would allow him to showcase his qualities once again and potentially re-establish himself among the league’s leading midfielders.

Should the deal be completed in the coming days, Blom is expected to become a central figure in Hunt’s plans, with Stellenbosch viewing him as a key addition capable of bringing balance, leadership and quality to the heart of the team.

As the transfer window gathers momentum, all indications suggest that Njabulo Blom’s next chapter will be written in Stellenbosch colours, with the midfielder poised to make a high-profile return to South African football.
