Stefano Pioli in advanced talks to become Trabzon Spor manager, reports say

Stefano Pioli is understood to be close to becoming the new manager of Trabzon Spor, with negotiations between the Turkish club and the Italian coach reportedly at an advanced stage.

Pioli has moved ahead of the other candidates under consideration, although no formal contract has been signed, according to Turkish reports. The same reports say there is currently a 90% likelihood that he will take charge.

The proposed appointment is expected to cost Trabzon Spor more than €3m. That figure would cover Pioli’s salary as well as the payments due to the members of the coaching staff he would bring with him.

Sky Sport Italia also reported that Trabzon Spor had made exploratory contact with Pioli to discuss the possibility of him becoming the club’s manager.

The club is looking for a successor to Fatih Tekke, who has left his position as head coach.

Pioli’s attacking approach

Reports in Turkey have highlighted the potential fit between Pioli’s attacking ideas and the qualities of Trabzon Spor forward Mohamed Salah.

Salah’s movement from the right wing into central areas, his runs beyond defenders and his effectiveness inside the penalty area are all said to align with the style Pioli favours.

If Pioli is appointed, Trabzon Spor are expected to build their attacking plan around the abilities of the Egypt international.

Pioli has managed several clubs in Italy, with his most notable spell coming at Milan. He led Milan to the Italian league title in the 2021-2022 season.

The Italian also managed Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr during the previous season, although that spell has since ended.

Trabzon Spor signed Mohamed Salah at the start of the current season as a free agent, following the end of his contract with Liverpool.
