Stade Rennes set to sign Lazio forward Boulaye Dia on transfer deadline day

Stade Rennes are set to complete the deadline day signing of Senegal international forward Boulaye Dia from Serie A side Lazio.

The Ligue 1 club have reportedly agreed a €2 million loan deal for the 29-year-old, with the agreement including an option to make the transfer permanent for a further €9 million.

Dia is expected to travel to France and undergo his medical examination on Tuesday before completing the move to Brittany, barring any late complications.

The experienced forward is expected to strengthen Rennes’ attacking options as the club prepares for a demanding campaign that will see them compete in both Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League.

Although Rennes have Estéban Lepaul, who has been a reliable option in attack, the club felt they lacked sufficient depth in the forward positions. New arrivals Issa Soumaré and Eliezer Mayenda are yet to fully settle and make a significant impact, increasing the need for another experienced attacking option.

Rennes’ decision to return to the transfer market was also influenced by the departure of Breel Embolo, who left the club for Major League Soccer side Atlanta United. The Switzerland international was an important part of the club’s attacking setup, and his exit left a gap that Rennes have been looking to fill before the transfer window closes.

Dia has emerged as the preferred solution, despite coming off a difficult spell in Italy.

The Senegalese forward struggled for consistency during his time at Lazio last season, managing just three goal contributions while starting only 14 matches. His limited involvement contributed to uncertainty over his future in Rome, paving the way for a move away from the Italian capital.

Rennes will be hoping a change of environment can help Dia rediscover the form that previously made him one of the most effective forwards in European football.

Before joining Lazio, Dia enjoyed productive spells in France, particularly with Reims, where his performances earned him recognition and ultimately helped secure a move to Villarreal before his transfer to Italy.

For Rennes, the move represents an opportunity to add experience and competition to their frontline while giving Dia a chance to revive his career in familiar surroundings.

If the medical and final formalities are completed as expected, Dia will become Rennes’ latest addition as they look to build a squad capable of competing on two fronts this season.
