Stade Brestois target Congolese defender Chancel Mbemba amid summer transfer push

Stade Brestois have identified Congolese international Chancel Mbemba as a top defensive target ahead of the summer transfer window, with the 31-year-old now available on a free transfer following his exit from Olympique de Marseille.

Mbemba, who endured a difficult final season in Marseille after being frozen out of the squad, is now considering his next move.

The experienced centre-back has emerged as a prime candidate for Brest, who are aiming to bolster their squad ahead of their European campaign next season.

Talks had previously been initiated during the winter transfer window, and the Breton club is now intensifying its efforts to bring him on board.

Brest’s interest in Mbemba is driven by their need to add proven leadership and Ligue 1 experience to their back line. The former FC Porto and Anderlecht defender ticks all the boxes from a footballing perspective, but his wages could present a stumbling block.

During his time in Marseille, Mbemba was reportedly earning close to €4 million per year, a figure that may prove challenging for Brest to match.

Negotiations are expected to focus on bridging the gap between Mbemba’s financial expectations and Brest’s salary structure.

Should an agreement be reached, the move would be seen as a major coup for the club, as they prepare for a demanding season in both domestic and European competitions.

Mbemba’s departure from Marseille was the result of a long-standing dispute with the club’s hierarchy. After rejecting a proposed move to Saudi outfit Al-Shabab last summer, the defender found himself sidelined indefinitely.

Despite pressure from the league and internal recommendations for his reinstatement, the club kept him away from the first-team environment throughout the season.

The former Newcastle United player declined multiple offers from Marseille to rejoin the squad, instead choosing to prioritise his international commitments with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

His decision marked the end of a strained and ultimately fruitless chapter in the south of France.

Now free to choose his next destination, Mbemba is weighing up his options carefully. Brest’s sporting project, including participation in European competition, is likely to appeal to the veteran defender.

However, much will depend on whether the financial terms can be aligned.

For Brest, landing a player of Mbemba’s stature would underline their ambitions ahead of the new campaign.

His physical presence, tactical awareness, and wealth of experience could offer the defensive stability the club is seeking as they look to compete on multiple fronts.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Brest’s pursuit of Mbemba signals their intent to build a team capable of sustaining last season’s momentum.

The coming weeks will reveal whether the two parties can come to terms and set the stage for a fresh start in Finistère for the Congolese centre-back.
