Stade Brestois reunite with Franco-Malian defender Soumaïla Coulibaly
Stade Brestois have confirmed the return of Franco-Malian defender Soumaïla Coulibaly on a season-long loan from RC Strasbourg Alsace, without an option to buy.
The 21-year-old, who only joined Strasbourg from Borussia Dortmund on 7 July, will once again wear Brest’s colours after a successful spell with the club during the 2024/25 season.
Brest announced the move through their official social media channels, confirming that Coulibaly will take the number 44 shirt.
Although the transfer window closed weeks ago, Coulibaly arrives as a national joker, a provision allowing Ligue 1 clubs to sign players outside the official registration periods.
His return strengthens Brest’s defensive options ahead of a challenging run of fixtures in the French top flight.
Coulibaly, under contract with Stade Brestois until 30 June 2030, carries a market valuation of €8 million and is widely regarded as one of the most promising young centre-backs in French football.
His familiarity with the club’s environment and playing style is expected to ease his reintegration into Eric Roy’s squad.
This marks a continuation of Coulibaly’s career development following his initial loan spell from Borussia Dortmund.
Known for his composure, aerial ability and positional awareness, he is seen as a key reinforcement for Brest’s backline as they aim to build on their strong start to the season.
Brest’s immediate focus is on their upcoming Ligue 1 fixture — the eighth matchday of the French championship — where they will take on FC Lorient.
Betting company 1xBet currently offers odds of 2.85 for a Brest victory, 3.25 for a draw and 2.15 for a Lorient win.
Coulibaly’s return has been warmly welcomed by Brest supporters, who remember his steady performances during his previous stint at the club.
With his long-term contract in place and his familiarity with the team’s system, he is expected to play a pivotal role in Brest’s defensive stability this season.
As the club prepares for the clash with Lorient, the focus will be on integrating Coulibaly quickly and maximising his impact at the heart of the defence.
His arrival provides Brest with both experience at a high level and continuity in a crucial area of the pitch.
