Sporting Lisbon close on €20m deal for Famalicao defender Ibrahima Ba

Sporting Lisbon are on the verge of signing Senegalese central defender Ibrahima Ba from Famalicao in a deal worth €20m, just days after his proposed move to Strasbourg collapsed.

The 21-year-old passed his medical tests on Tuesday ahead of sealing a long-term contract with the Portuguese giants, according to French outlet L’Equipe.

Famalicao are set to receive €20m plus a percentage of any future transfer fee if the move is finalised, underlining Sporting’s belief in Ba’s potential and resale value.

Ba, who plays as a centre-back, is viewed as a direct successor to Ivorian defender Ousmane Diomande, who has been heavily linked with a transfer to Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

Medical checks ease knee injury concerns

Ba’s medical examinations in Portugal were seen as a crucial step, as the player suffered a knee injury towards the end of last season.

According to the report, Tuesday’s tests “n’auraient pas revele de probleme majeur a son genou” – they are not believed to have shown any serious issue with his knee.

During the off-season, Ba remained under close medical supervision by Famalicao’s staff while on holiday in Senegal. On his return to Europe, he underwent two MRI scans, which, again, are understood not to have revealed any significant damage.

The clean bill of health will come as a relief to Sporting, who are making a substantial investment in a young defender expected to develop into a key figure in their back line.

From Senegal’s top flight to a major European move

Before moving to Portugal, Ba came through the ranks at AJEL Rufisque, a club competing in Senegal’s top division.

His rise from domestic Senegalese football to a high-profile transfer in one of Europe’s leading leagues reflects both his rapid development and the growing prominence of Senegal as a source of defensive talent.

Ba’s performances at Famalicao in the Primeira Liga attracted attention from several European clubs. Strasbourg were close to securing his signature earlier in the window, but that transfer ultimately broke down, paving the way for Sporting to step in.

Sporting plan for life after Diomande

Ba’s arrival is expected to be part of Sporting’s strategy to refresh their defence, with Ousmane Diomande “annonce a Nottingham” – reported to be on his way to Nottingham Forest.

Diomande has developed into one of the most highly rated young centre-backs in Europe during his time at Sporting, and the club appear to be moving quickly to ensure continuity at the heart of their defence.

If the deal is completed, Ba will join a Sporting side aiming to compete domestically and in Europe, while Famalicao will bank a record fee and retain a stake in any future move – a structure that suggests both clubs expect the Senegalese defender’s value to rise further in the coming years.
