Kevin-Prince Boateng’s Move to Sporting Lisbon Collapses Over Medical Concerns
Ghanaian international Kevin-Prince Boateng has seen a proposed move to Sporting Lisbon fall through, with conflicting reports emerging over the reasons behind the failed transfer.
Initially, it was suggested that the deal had collapsed due to disagreements over the player’s image rights. However, Sporting’s head of international relations, Augusto Inácio, has firmly denied those claims, citing medical concerns as the key issue.
“Boateng was here in Lisbon, he underwent medical tests and failed due to a knee problem,” Inácio told Portuguese television channel SIC Notícias. “He had surgery on his knee at the age of 16, and for the past two or three years, he has been experiencing ongoing issues.”
The revelation casts a shadow over Boateng’s immediate future. The 28-year-old midfielder is currently without a club after parting ways with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 earlier this year. Sporting Lisbon had appeared close to securing his signature before the medical setback halted negotiations.
Boateng, who has represented Ghana at multiple international tournaments and previously played for clubs including AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur, now faces uncertainty over his next destination. With concerns raised about his long-term fitness, interest from other potential suitors may cool.
The midfielder’s failed medical could prove a significant obstacle as he looks to continue his career at the highest level. For now, questions remain over his fitness and where — or if — he will be able to secure a contract ahead of the new season.
