Sporting CP backed to beat Vitoria SC as 2.02 second-half goals bet attracts attention

Sporting CP are expected to respond to their disappointing opening-day draw when they host Vitoria SC in the second round of the Liga Betclic, with a 2.02 betting option highlighting the possibility of a stronger second half at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The match is scheduled for Friday, 14 August 2026, with kick-off at 19:15 GMT. Nasser Eddy, a consultant for NCI Sport and presenter of the European Champions League on Radio Nostalgie, has provided his assessment and predictions for the game.

Portugal’s domestic season has begun before the major European leagues officially get under way, and Sporting CP are already under pressure to make up ground. The reigning runners-up, who were beaten in last season’s cup final and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, are determined to reclaim the Portuguese title they lost to rivals FC Porto.

However, Rui Borges’ side began their 2026-27 campaign with an unexpected setback. Sporting were held to a 2-2 draw by Estrela Amadora last Saturday, against a team more accustomed to fighting for top-flight survival.

That result contrasted sharply with Sporting’s impressive pre-season. They won all five of their friendly matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding only two against strong opposition including Celtic, RC Strasbourg, AS Monaco and Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham Forest subsequently signed Sporting’s Ivory Coast defender Ousmane Diomande for 40 million euros after three seasons in Lisbon. His departure followed that of playmaker Trincao, who moved to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, leaving Borges without two important members of his squad.

Despite those losses, Sporting’s attacking threat remains considerable. Geny Catamo and his team-mates scored at least twice in each of their five most recent matches, although they conceded the opening goal in their last two outings. Fifteen of their 19 goals during that sequence came after half-time.

Vitoria SC will therefore need to contain a powerful Sporting attack, particularly after also suffering defeat in their opening league fixture. Tiago Margarido’s team lost 1-0 at home to Arouca, despite going through pre-season unbeaten in seven matches.

Vitoria SC scored in every one of those friendlies, including games against demanding opponents such as Al-Ahli, the reigning two-time Asian champions, and Nottingham Forest. Even so, the visitors appear to be a level below Sporting on paper.

The corresponding fixture in May offered a clear indication of the difference between the teams. On 4 May, with three matches remaining in the previous championship, Sporting defeated Vitoria SC 5-1 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Recent meetings between the clubs have generally produced open and entertaining football. At least two goals have been scored in each of the latest encounters, while the average has exceeded four goals per game across the last 10 meetings.

The overall record is also strongly in Sporting’s favour. In the past 40 head-to-head matches, Sporting CP have won 24 times, compared with seven victories for Vitoria SC and nine draws. Vitoria can still cause occasional surprises, however, as shown by their 2-1 win in the League Cup earlier this year.

One player attracting particular attention is Sporting striker Fotis Ioannidis. The Greece international joined from Panathinaikos at the start of last season but endured an underwhelming first campaign after a medial ligament injury in his left knee repeatedly kept him out.

Ioannidis made 13 Liga Portugal appearances and scored three goals despite those problems. He found the net during pre-season and also scored in Sporting’s opening league match. The 26-year-old has started as the central striker and appears well placed to become Borges’ first-choice forward this season, despite competition from Luis Suarez, Rafael Nel and Pedro Goncalves.

Sporting CP are priced at 1.19 to win, reflecting the expected difference in quality. A combined bet on a Sporting victory and both teams scoring is priced at 2.50.

Given the scoring record in recent meetings, more than 3.5 goals in the match is considered a possibility at odds of 2.17. The recommended 2.02 selection is for Sporting to score more in the second half than in the first, based on their recent tendency to produce their most prolific attacking performances after the interval.
