Spanish top-flight referees set to address media after matches for the first time

La Liga referees are set to speak to the media after matches from this weekend, in a historic change for Spanish football.

The move, agreed by La Liga and the Technical Committee of Referees, will allow supporters to hear directly from at least two officials after the final whistle during the opening weekend of the new arrangement.

The initiative expands an experiment introduced earlier this season, when referees began giving interviews before matches for the first time. Those conversations have been conducted by journalists working for the broadcasters that hold the rights to La Liga and have continued over recent weeks.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the post-match interviews will be introduced during the current weekend. It will be the first time in the history of Spanish football that referees have been interviewed immediately after league matches.

The decision means the referee interviews will no longer be limited to pre-match explanations. La Liga and the Technical Committee of Referees now plan to extend the process to the period after games, giving officials an opportunity to discuss their decisions and the match itself.

One of the fixtures expected to feature the new arrangement is the Basque derby between Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad. The two sides meet on Sunday at 21:00 at San Mames, with the match referee due to speak once the game has ended, according to DAZN.

The move represents the latest development in the way La Liga matches are covered on television, following the introduction of pre-match referee interviews earlier in the campaign.

The fixture information accompanying the report lists Barcelona and Deportivo Alaves under La Liga on 31 October 2026. It also lists Racing de Santander and Real Madrid under La Liga on 1 November 2026.
