Barcelona have confirmed that Spanish-Moroccan starlet Lamine Yamal will wear the club’s revered number 10 shirt from the 2025/26 season, taking over from Ansu Fati.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, cements the teenager’s growing status as the club’s next great hope.
Yamal, whose father is Moroccan and mother is from Equatorial Guinea, becomes the youngest player in Barça’s history to be assigned the shirt once worn by legends like Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, and Diego Maradona.
The reveal came during the official institutional signing of Yamal’s contract renewal, celebrated with a video featuring a sketch of the winger alongside the new shirt number.
The club posted the news on social media with the caption: “Our new No. 10.”
Ansu Fati had inherited the number following Messi’s departure in 2021 but struggled to live up to its weight before leaving for Monaco. Barcelona now turn to Yamal, who has enjoyed a breakout season and is widely seen as the symbol of the club’s future.
The 18-year-old, who made history in 2023 as the youngest-ever La Liga debutant for Barcelona, is expected to play an increasingly central role under Hansi Flick.
