Lamine Yamal injury puts Barcelona’s Valencia and Newcastle clashes in doubt

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has revealed his plan to use Marc Cucurella to contain Barcelona star Lamine Yamal in this week’s Champions League clash.

The focus is on the young winger, whose pace and creativity have troubled Europe’s top defenders over the past year.

Yamal, whose father is Moroccan and mother is from Equatorial Guinea, has become one of Barcelona’s most dangerous attackers.

His recent performances, including two assists in a 4-0 victory over Athletic Club, underline why Maresca considers him a key threat to Chelsea’s defensive structure.

Maresca praised Cucurella’s versatility and influence, saying: “Cucu is a big advantage for us always, not just tomorrow.

“His level has been amazing since I’ve been at the club, not just defending, but as part of our game, he is a big value and we are very pleased with him.

“They have quite a few players we need to face as a team.”

Chelsea enter the match on the back of three consecutive Premier League wins without conceding a goal, moving them to second in the table.

Yet European form has been inconsistent, including a disappointing draw with Qarabag in their last Champions League outing. Maresca will be seeking a sharper display to halt Barcelona’s momentum at Camp Nou.

Cucurella described facing Barcelona as a “very special game” for him and his family.

“We have the opportunity to play Champions League, a special night. It’s always a good game between the clubs. Hopefully tomorrow we can do a good game and get the three points,” he said.

The Blues’ defensive setup will hinge on limiting Yamal’s influence, while also containing Barcelona’s wider attacking threats.
