Nico Williams turned down Barcelona in each of the last two summer transfer windows because he wanted to stay at Athletic Club, despite the chance to join his close friend Lamine Yamal at both club and national-team level.
He addressed the topic in an interview with GQ Hype, shared through Mundo Deportivo, and spoke with humour about his bond with Yamal, who is five years younger.
“He has incredible talent and he proves it every day, but he knows I act like a father to him,” Williams said as he discussed their friendship.
Williams and Yamal aim to lead Spain to another World Cup title next summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The Athletic winger spoke with confidence about La Roja’s chances but avoided comparisons with other contenders.
“We believe in teamwork, we follow the coach’s ideas, and we prepare as well as possible for the World Cup,” he said.
“We don’t compare ourselves to other teams. Many nations can win the title, and being seen as favourites is flattering.
But polls never win World Cups; everything happens on the pitch.”
The forward also explained why he rejected Barcelona by extending his contract with Athletic Club earlier this year.
He stressed that the decision came from a deep emotional connection to the Basque club and the city of Bilbao.
“Athletic and Bilbao mean everything to me. I grew up here as a player and as a person.
Representing this club taught me the importance of hard work, humility and family. Athletic is unique in the world,” he said.
He added that he always trusted his instincts when choosing his future and valued the support of his family, particularly his brother Iñaki Williams.
“I’ve always listened to my heart. My roots and my community matter to me. My family is here and they support every decision I make.
I love hearing my brother’s advice, and being able to play with him in the Champions League is a dream come true.”
