Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams has been forced to step away from the pitch due to a persistent pubalgia, with no return date currently set.
The 23-year-old was left out of Sunday’s squad for the 2-1 win over Real Oviedo as he began treatment for the injury, which was first diagnosed last season.
Williams’ absence marks a setback after a period in which he appeared to be regaining form.
“He was starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and now it seems he has taken two or three steps back,” said his brother and teammate Iñaki Williams, speaking to Marca.
Athletic Bilbao head coach Ernesto Valverde has also expressed growing frustration with the ongoing situation, reflecting the club’s concern over the forward’s prolonged struggles.
The club has not specified the expected length of his layoff, but reports from the Spanish media indicate it will be no less than four weeks.
Surgery has been ruled out by Athletic Bilbao, with officials noting that an operation could compromise Williams’ speed, fail to guarantee a full recovery, and potentially sideline him for three to six months.
The club appears committed to a conservative rehabilitation approach, prioritizing long-term fitness over a rushed return.
Williams’ injury has also impacted his contributions this season. The forward has scored four goals in 26 appearances, 18 of which came as a starter, a sharp decline from last season when he netted 11 goals in 45 games.
The dip in form underscores both the physical and psychological challenges the young winger faces, as he seeks to regain his rhythm and consistency in La Liga.
