Spain reject Egypt’s request to host friendly in Cairo amid middle east tensions
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has confirmed that a high-profile international friendly between Egypt national football team and Spain national football team will take place as both sides prepare for upcoming competitions.
The match is scheduled for March 31 and will be played at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, the home ground of Real Madrid.
According to reports published by the Egyptian outlet Batolat, there had been recent discussions about staging the friendly in Cairo.
However, the Spanish side reportedly declined the proposal due to the current geopolitical climate in the region, particularly tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States.
The Egyptian FA confirmed that it had received an official communication from the Royal Spanish Football Federation proposing the friendly encounter.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan welcomed the opportunity to face a top European opponent, viewing the match as an important test for the Pharaohs as they continue preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
