Pape Diop Responds to Racist Abuse with Defiant Gesture, Refuses to Regret Action
Pape Diop has responded to racist behavior from Atletico Madrid fans during last weekend’s La Liga match between Levante and Los Colchoneros, when monkey chants were directed at him. In an act of defiance, the Senegalese midfielder performed a dance move in front of the offending fans, a gesture that ignited clashes between players on the pitch.
Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, Diop has made it clear that he has no regrets about his actions. Speaking to Marca, he said: “I try not to think about what happened and move on, but it’s complicated.” The 33-year-old further explained, “I’ve experienced similar things in other stadiums and I’ve always gotten over it, but this time it was in front of my daughter and my wife. I couldn’t let it go, I reacted well. I don’t regret anything.”
Diop’s strong response has sparked conversation about the ongoing issue of racism in football, with many praising his decision to stand up against the abuse he faced.
