Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has named Morocco among the strongest teams expected to challenge for glory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the upcoming tournament will be one of the most competitive in history.
Speaking about Spain’s ambitions, De la Fuente expressed confidence in his side’s ability to fight for the ultimate prize while acknowledging the quality of opposition they will face.
“Yes, we can be world champions. We are capable and we will fight for it,” he told AS, adding that the tournament will feature several elite teams, including Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, Portugal and Morocco, whom he considers among the top contenders.
The Spanish coach highlighted the depth of competition expected at the next World Cup, noting that the field will be packed with established powerhouses and rapidly improving sides.
“There is no other World Cup that has included such a strong group of contenders as the one we will see in the next edition. The major teams such as Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France and Portugal will be strongly present, but there are also teams like Morocco that have recently proven their strength and have become a force to be reckoned with,” he said.
De la Fuente further praised Morocco’s recent progress on the international stage, pointing to the strength and development of their squad.
“There are some teams that will show remarkable progress, such as Morocco, which has a strong team. They recently won the Under-20 World Cup and now have players in the best leagues in the world,” he noted.
Morocco at the 2022 FIFA World Cup made history as the first African country to reach the semi-final stage. They will look to reach the final at the 2026 edition.
