Cameroon’s Patrick Ekeng Making Waves in La Liga with Cordoba
By BBC News
Cameroonian midfielder Patrick Ekeng has made an immediate impact in Spain following his move to newly promoted La Liga side Córdoba CF. The 24-year-old, who joined from Swiss club Lausanne-Sport, has quickly become a key figure in the team’s midfield, impressing with his energy, composure, and technical skill.
Ekeng’s performances have not gone unnoticed. Cameroon national team coach Volker Finke has called the player up as part of a new generation of Indomitable Lions, as the national team begins a period of renewal.
Before joining the national squad, however, Ekeng remains focused on Córdoba’s upcoming clash with defending champions Atlético Madrid. “I signed in Spain to play this kind of match,” Ekeng told reporters. “After my season in Lausanne, some of the big Swiss clubs were interested in me, but I chose Córdoba because I wanted to play in La Liga. With humility and determination, I’m here to reach the highest level I can.”
Ekeng’s journey to Spain began in France, where he first trained professionally with Le Mans FC in 2010. “Le Mans felt like the right choice,” he explained. “It was a club that had shown it could recruit wisely — players like Gervinho and Romaric had passed through. I had a loan spell at Rodez and later played in Ligue 2.”
However, financial difficulties at Le Mans forced Ekeng to seek opportunities elsewhere. “I had to leave because of the club’s financial problems. Lausanne turned out to be a good springboard for me.”
His move to Córdoba represents a significant step in Ekeng’s career, offering him the chance to prove himself at the highest level of European football. With his recent call-up to the Cameroon national team, the midfielder is now poised to take on both domestic and international challenges.
Ekeng’s story reflects the trajectory of many African talents who, after honing their skills in European second tiers, rise to prominence through perseverance and strategic career moves. As he prepares to face Atlético Madrid, one of Europe’s toughest opponents, Ekeng is already showing signs that he belongs among football’s elite.
Cordoba, who are fighting to establish themselves in La Liga after their promotion, will be relying on Ekeng’s presence in midfield as they look to compete with the league’s more established sides.
For the Cameroonian, the journey is far from over — but it’s off to a promising start.
