Spain and Argentina could meet in Qatar this November after World Cup final showdown

Spain and Argentina are reportedly on course to renew their rivalry later this year, with Qatar emerging as the likely host of the long-awaited Finalissima between the champions of Europe and South America.

According to reports, the match is expected to be played at Lusail Stadium in November, months after Spain defeated Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Finalissima plans revived after earlier postponement

The Finalissima, which pits the reigning UEFA European Championship winners against the CONMEBOL Copa América champions, had initially been scheduled before the 2026 World Cup.

An earlier proposal to stage the fixture in Qatar on 27 March was abandoned after security concerns and heightened political tensions in the Middle East complicated preparations and travel arrangements.

However, fresh reports indicate that discussions have resumed, raising hopes that the showcase encounter will finally take place before the end of the year.

According to DSports 103.1 FM, football’s governing bodies are working towards an agreement that would see Spain and Argentina meet at Lusail Stadium in Qatar in November.

TNT Sports Argentina has also reported that FIFA is keen for the match to be staged this year, signalling renewed momentum behind the long-delayed fixture.

Messi’s international future remains a talking point

One of the biggest storylines surrounding the proposed encounter is the future of Argentina captain Lionel Messi.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has yet to confirm whether he will continue playing for the national team after what many viewed as his final World Cup appearance.

If Messi decides to retire from international football before the Finalissima is played, the occasion would lose one of its biggest attractions, although a meeting between the champions of Europe and South America would still rank among the standout fixtures on the international calendar.
