Football fans began arriving at FNB Stadium well ahead of Saturday’s Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, with traffic building on roads around the venue from 11am.
The journey to the stadium was largely trouble-free, and many supporters appeared to have arrived earlier than they had for previous editions of the derby.
Drivers without parking tickets were instructed to turn around as major routes leading to the stadium experienced heavy traffic. By midday, some fans were already inside the stadium precinct, choosing to remain in their cars.
A stage had been set up at the venue, with several artists performing before the match. However, many supporters showed little interest in attending the entertainment and instead stayed in their vehicles, where some enjoyed alcoholic beverages.
The early arrival of fans contrasted with the recent rugby match between the Springboks and New Zealand, when supporters were seen taking their seats inside the stadium at a similar stage.
Supporters who spoke to Sowetanlive said they were pleased with the organisation at the venue. They highlighted the ticket-scanning process and said it had been completed without the problems experienced at previous Soweto derbies.
The stadium precinct continued to fill as kick-off approached, with the match scheduled to begin at 3.30pm.
