Soweto Derby: Orlando Pirates dominate list of most valuable players

Orlando Pirates have eight of the 10 most valuable players involved in this weekend’s Soweto Derby, with Oswin Appollis topping the rankings ahead of the club’s rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

According to Transfermarkt, Pirates attacker Appollis is valued at €2.5m (R46.5m), making him the most valuable player from either side.

The forward has not made the strongest start to the season, but he remains the Buccaneers’ most highly valued player.

Pirates’ dominance of the list reflects the club’s achievements in recent years, as well as the number of their players who have represented Bafana Bafana.

Several Buccaneers players have featured for South Africa in major international competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup. Their involvement at that level has contributed to their market value.

Kaizer Chiefs, by contrast, have had fewer players involved with the senior national team, which is reflected in the rankings.
