Southampton will have to cope without Sofiane Boufal for their upcoming Premier League clash against Watford on Matchday 14, as the Moroccan midfielder has been ruled out through injury. The absence comes at an inconvenient time for the Saints, who are looking to secure an important result and climb the standings.
Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl confirmed the news during his pre-match press conference, explaining that Boufal picked up an unusual injury at home rather than during training or a competitive fixture. The setback has prevented the attacking midfielder from taking part in preparations with the rest of the squad in the days leading up to the match.
According to the Austrian coach, the incident occurred in a rather unexpected manner. Boufal reportedly struck his foot against a table while moving around his house, an accident that has left him in pain and unable to train properly. Hasenhüttl described the situation with a hint of frustration, noting that the player has missed several sessions as a result.
He revealed that Boufal has been sidelined for three consecutive days and continues to feel discomfort, making it difficult for him to participate in full training. Given the short recovery window before Saturday’s game, the coaching staff have concluded that it would be too risky to include him in the squad. As a result, he will not be available for selection against Watford.
The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate for both the player and the team. Boufal has been working to regain a more prominent role in the lineup but has struggled for consistent minutes in recent weeks. He has not started a league match since late September, when he last featured in the starting eleven. Since then, his appearances have largely been limited to brief cameos off the bench.
Last weekend, he played only five minutes in Southampton’s 2-2 draw away at Arsenal, a match in which the Saints managed to earn a valuable point. That short outing suggested he might gradually reintegrate into the squad, but this latest setback has once again disrupted his momentum.
Boufal’s absence deprives Southampton of one of their most creative options in midfield. Known for his dribbling ability, flair, and capacity to unlock defenses, the former Lille player can offer something different in the attacking third. Even when used as a substitute, his unpredictability and technical skills often provide a spark.
For Hasenhüttl, the focus now shifts to finding alternative solutions within the squad. Other players will need to step up and fill the creative void as Southampton prepare for what could be a tightly contested encounter with Watford. With points at a premium in the league, every match carries added significance.
While the injury does not appear to be long-term, Boufal’s immediate priority will be recovery and returning to full fitness. The Saints will hope he can put this strange mishap behind him quickly and resume his push for more regular involvement in the weeks ahead.
