South Sudan appoint Christian N’Sengi-Biembe as new head coach

South Sudan have appointed Congolese coach Christian N’Sengi-Biembe as the new head coach of the national team, with the experienced tactician tasked with leading the Bright Stars into a crucial period of international football.

The 63-year-old coach has signed a one-year contract with the South Sudan Football Association, with an option to extend the agreement for an additional year.

N’Sengi-Biembe’s immediate responsibility will be to prepare the Bright Stars for their upcoming international fixtures, with particular attention on the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which are scheduled to begin in September.

South Sudan will be hoping that the experienced Congolese coach can guide the team towards a historic qualification for the continental tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The appointment represents an important step in South Sudan’s efforts to strengthen their national team and improve their competitiveness on the African football scene.

N’Sengi-Biembe’s responsibilities will extend beyond the senior national team. As part of his new role, the Congolese tactician will also serve as a technical adviser to South Sudan’s various youth national teams.

His involvement with the youth sides is expected to help improve the country’s football development structure while creating a clearer pathway between the junior national teams and the senior squad.

N’Sengi-Biembe arrives in South Sudan with considerable international coaching experience.

The Congolese coach previously managed the Democratic Republic of Congo national team, taking charge in August 2019. His tenure with the Leopards lasted until May 2021, giving him experience at the highest level of African international football.

He will now begin a new chapter of his coaching career with South Sudan, where his first major challenge will be preparing the Bright Stars for their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

With a one-year contract and an option for another year, N’Sengi-Biembe will have the opportunity to lay the foundations for a longer-term project while immediately being judged on South Sudan’s performances in the upcoming international fixtures.

The Bright Stars will be hoping that his experience and knowledge of African football can help them take another step forward and challenge for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
