SuperSport United defender Ime Okon is expected to make his final appearance for the club on Saturday night when the Pretoria-based side faces AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium in the Betway Premiership.
The highly rated 20-year-old has attracted strong interest from two major European clubs, according to SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews, who confirmed that discussions are progressing but did not reveal the names of the teams involved.
Okon previously trialled with Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv, while Danish side FC Midtjylland had shown interest in securing his services last year.
Both clubs appear to be leading the race for his signature following their closer assessment of the young defender.
“We now have two opportunities for Ime, and both are big clubs,” Matthews stated, indicating that Okon’s move to Europe is likely to happen soon.
Since being promoted at the start of the 2023/24 campaign by head coach Gavin Hunt, Okon has become a key figure in SuperSport United’s defence, making 42 appearances.
His consistent performances also earned him a call-up to Bafana Bafana.
Born in Johannesburg, Okon is eligible to represent both South Africa and Nigeria due to his family heritage.
Matthews emphasized the club’s commitment to developing young talent, noting that SuperSport United remains an ideal stepping stone for South African players seeking opportunities in European football.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the club typically negotiates sell-on clauses in transfer deals, as seen with Shandre Campbell’s recent move to Belgian side Club Brugge.
