South African teenager Mogamat Ashan Andrews on trial at Danish club Holbæk

Mogamat Ashan Andrews is on trial with Danish third-tier club Holbæk Bold- & Idrætsforening as the 18-year-old seeks to earn his first professional contract in Europe.

The Cape Town prospect is being assessed by the Copenhagen-based side after making the move from Houtbay FC, who play in the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League.

Andrews is from Hanover Park, a Cape Town suburb with a strong football tradition despite facing socio-economic challenges. His trial at Holbæk represents a significant step up from domestic regional football to the semi-professional ranks in Europe.

Holbæk previously had Michael Loftman as their coach, but he has since left the club to join University of Pretoria. Andrews is therefore attempting to secure his opportunity under the Danish side’s new management.

The Danish Third Division is regarded as a route into the professional game, with clubs in the competition providing opportunities for players to develop and progress towards the Superliga and beyond.

For Andrews, the division offers the chance to gain experience in a European football environment while adapting to different cultural and tactical demands. Its competitive level also provides a platform for young players to establish themselves before potentially moving higher in the Danish game.

A permanent agreement would represent an important breakthrough for the teenager and would also underline the player-development work being carried out by Houtbay at ABC Motsepe League level.

The trial will determine whether Holbæk offer Andrews a permanent deal or whether he returns to Houtbay to continue his development.
