South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Guyton McKenzie, has issued a public apology to Moroccans following controversial comments made by Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos about the organisation of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
McKenzie distanced himself from the coach’s criticism and was emphatic in his praise for the tournament hosts, insisting Morocco delivered an outstanding event.
“The Moroccans did an excellent job, and I am very proud of Morocco. They have proven to the world that Africa is ready to host global events, once again,” he said.
The minister made it clear that he was displeased with Broos’ conduct during the competition, stressing that such behaviour was inappropriate and disrespectful. He noted that making disparaging remarks while in another country crossed a line.
“I was very upset with the Bafana Bafana coach, and I’ll be honest with you, you shouldn’t do that. You shouldn’t go to someone’s country and insult him in his own country. Nobody should do that. It’s wrong,” the Minister stressed.
McKenzie further argued that the coach’s comments were not grounded in reality, pointing to his own firsthand experience in Morocco. According to him, the vibrant atmosphere and warm reception from locals contradicted any negative portrayal of the tournament.
“We were in the streets, and we saw the atmosphere, so this was a big mistake, and I want to apologise to the Moroccans on his behalf for his statements. People should not be insulted in front of the whole world, who welcomed us with such openness,” he said.
He concluded by once again commending Morocco’s efforts, describing the tournament as exceptional and setting a new benchmark for African football events.
“The Moroccans have done an excellent job, and this is the best edition of the Africa Cup of Nations I have ever seen in my life,” the Minister added.
