South African Premiership: Golden Arrows stun Sundowns as Premiership leaders stumble
Matchday eight of the South African Premiership delivered a series of shocks on Wednesday, with Mamelodi Sundowns suffering their first defeat in nearly a year and Kaizer Chiefs, Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch all dropping valuable points.
Golden Arrows end Sundowns’ unbeaten streak
In Umlazi, Golden Arrows produced the upset of the round with a 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns, their first victory against the Pretoria giants since November 2019.
The decisive moment came on the half-hour mark when Dion rose to head past Ronwen Williams, sealing a result that sent the home crowd into jubilation.
Despite enjoying 73% possession, Sundowns failed to convert their dominance into goals, with coach Miguel Cardoso—marking his 50th match in charge—left frustrated as his side slipped from top spot to second place behind Sekhukhune United.
Orbit College breathe new life into their campaign
At Olympia Park, Orbit College ended a run of five winless matches with a narrow 1-0 triumph over Polokwane City.
Mbulelo Wagaba’s strike in the 62nd minute proved enough to give the Mswenko Boys their second win of the season.
The result lifted them out of the relegation zone into 12th place, while Polokwane, unbeaten in their previous five outings, dropped to seventh.
Chiefs pegged back by Gallants
Kaizer Chiefs were held 1-1 at home by Marumo Gallants in Johannesburg.
Khanyisa Mayo marked his first start with a goal in the 39th minute, raising hopes of a long-awaited victory for the Amakhosi.
But Jaison Clifford struck with a superb equaliser in the 75th minute to snatch a point for the visitors.
Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi was the hero, saving Gaston Sirino’s penalty to preserve the draw.
Chiefs remain adrift in mid-table, still struggling to build momentum.
Stellenbosch’s struggles persist
Stellenbosch failed to break their poor run as they drew 0-0 with Durban City.
While the result halted a four-match losing streak, it extended their winless spell and left them on just five points from eight games.
Durban City, meanwhile, once again demonstrated their defensive resilience, climbing to 12 points and staying within touching distance of the leaders, although their lack of cutting edge in attack remains an issue.
Other results
Richards Bay FC edged Magesi 1-0, while Sekhukhune United drew 1-1 with Chippa United to move top of the table.
TS Galaxy rounded off the evening with a convincing 3-1 win over AmaZulu.
