Themba Zwane uncertain about Sundowns future

South African star Themba Zwane has casted doubts about his future at Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the next football campaign.

Zwane, who has been one of Sundowns’ most influential players over the years, opened up about his uncertain situation following the club’s triumphant CAF Champions League campaign.

The experienced midfielder made a brief cameo appearance on Sunday night as Sundowns secured continental glory against ASFAR in Morocco, adding yet another major trophy to his decorated career.

However, despite the celebrations surrounding the club’s success, uncertainty now hangs over the future of one of the club’s most iconic figures.

Speaking during a press conference after the team returned from North Africa on Monday evening, Zwane admitted he remains in the dark regarding his future at Chloorkop.

“To be honest, I don’t know,” Zwane said. “I don’t want to lie, I don’t know. We will see when time goes.”

His comments are likely to spark major discussion among Sundowns supporters, especially considering the midfielder’s legendary status at the club and his enormous contribution over the years.

Zwane has been at the heart of Sundowns’ dominance in South African football for nearly a decade, helping the club win numerous league titles, domestic trophies and continental honours. Known for his creativity, intelligence on the ball and ability to influence big matches, he has long been regarded as one of the finest midfielders South Africa has produced in recent years.

But this season has been far more difficult for the 35-year-old.

A lengthy injury spell severely disrupted his campaign and limited his impact for large parts of the season. The midfielder struggled for regular game time as Sundowns continued to compete on multiple fronts, while younger players increasingly stepped into prominent roles within the squad.

As a result, questions have started to emerge regarding whether the club will offer him a new contract or begin planning for life after one of their greatest-ever players.

Although Zwane still possesses immense quality and experience, concerns over fitness and durability appear to have complicated discussions about his long-term future.

His uncertain club situation also comes at a difficult moment internationally.

Last week, Hugo Broos included Zwane in South Africa’s preliminary squad ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. However, there is growing belief that the veteran playmaker may not make the final squad set to be announced tomorrow.

The intense competition for places, combined with his lack of consistent football this season, has seemingly weakened his chances of securing a spot in the travelling squad.

Should Zwane fail to make the final selection, it would mark another emotional chapter in what has been a challenging season for the midfielder.

Still, despite the uncertainty, Zwane’s influence on South African football remains undeniable. He continues to command enormous respect within the game for his achievements, leadership and loyalty to Sundowns over the years.

For many supporters, the thought of seeing him leave the club is difficult to imagine given how closely his legacy is tied to Sundowns’ modern success story.

As speculation continues, attention will now shift to both the World Cup squad announcement and any potential developments regarding his contract situation.

Whether Zwane remains at Sundowns or not, his contribution to the club’s golden era is already firmly secured in history. But for now, one of South Africa’s most beloved footballers faces an uncertain future at both club and international level.
